Leg of FedEx driver impaled in Route 17 crash in Mahwah

EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: The impact in a crash last night of a FedEx truck into a tractor-trailer on Route 17 sheared off a metal bar that pierced the smaller vehicle’s engine and impaled the driver’s leg, requiring nearly a half-hour to extricate him, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

The FedEx driver has already had one surgery and is scheduled for several more to tend to widespread fractures from his sternum and pelvis to both legs, an emergency worker with knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The driver — identified by Mahwah police as Sean Sevasta, 26 — was pulling into a Pilot service station on Route 17 south when his truck rammed the flatbed trailer around 8 o’clock, police said.

AirMed One was waiting at the nearby Sheraton Hotel, which has a helipad, and whisked Sevasta to Hackensack University Medical Center as soon as firefighters and medical technicians could free him safely.

Summonses weren’t immediately issued to the Texas-based driver of the tractor-trailer. However, police said an investigation was continuing.
