Lawyer: Lower bail justified for Englewood woman charged with beating mother-in-law, 82

EXCLUSIVE: The attorney for an Englewood woman charged with severely beating her elderly mother-in-law told a judge in Hackensack today that he can prove that a “substantial reduction” in her $125,000 bail is justified.

Mary Tene, 54, wasn’t the only one present when the 82-year-old victim lost several teeth and sustained a concussion, attorney Aaron Miller said: Tene’s husband, Jimmy Miller, was indicted on the same charges based on evidence later presented to a grand jury.

Miller was originally charged with lesser offenses, which the grand jury upgraded a little over a month ago after hearing additional details in the case. He remains free on $50,000 bail.

Tene has been held in the Bergen County Jail since Oct. 17 after being transferred there from the Bronx, where detectives found her on Sept. 30 after a search of nearly three weeks.

The 5-foot-5-inch, 105-pound Tene beat the older woman after she tried to convince her to kick a drug habit, authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time.

Tene, who has a history of drug abuse and violent crimes in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Florida, high-tailed it across the Hudson and was tracked down despite cutting and coloring her hair and insisting to detectives who found her that she was someone else, Englewood police said.

Tene grimaced, nodded and looked around during today’s brief court appearance.

Superior Court Judge Edward A. Jerejian gave Miller permission to schedule a bail hearing for her.
