The driver was believed trapped and had to be extricated following the accident near the Hudson Street exit, emergency workers said. State Police said he sustained only minor injuries, however, and was treated at the scene.
Dry chemicals were used to soak up the spilled fuel, and the express lanes were reopened around 1:30, less than four hours after the crash.
State Police Lt. Stephen Jones said investigators are trying to determine why the westbound truck veered across the westbond lanes and tipped over the Jersey barrier near the Hudson Street exit.
Two other minor crashes occurred as a result, but police said none of the occupants of the four vehicles involved was injured seriously.
Besides State Police, Hackensack police and firefighters, Bergen County Police and at least three EMS squads responded.
