Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi entered a not guilty plea on behalf of 23-year-old Jose Wilbur Hernandez-Cerrito and continued his $500,000 bail.
However, she noted that he is in the country illegally and would continue to be held on an ICE detainer even if bail is posted.

Bergen County Sheriff’s officers then returned Hernandez-Cerrito to the county jail, where he remained held on charges of first-degree attempted murder and two third-degree illegal weapons possession counts.
The 27-year-old victim continued to recover at Hackensack University Medical Center after being stabbed in the heart before dawn last Thursday in the West Palisade Avenue house where the two lived.
Hernandez surrendered to police at a bus stop a few blocks down the street after they called him on his cellphone. Detectives found the knife during a subsequent search of the house, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time.
Officers Giovanni Alise, Jose Sanchez and Leonidas Restrepo, along with EMT personnel, were credited with saving the victim’s life by slowing the bleeding enough for him to make it to Hackensack University Medical Center’s trauma unit.
The officers immediately began administering first aid after responding to the 12:40 a.m. disturbance call. Emergency personnel took over moments later.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what the men were arguing about. They’re treating the stabbing as a domestic violence incident because the two were both living in the multi-family home.
