After contacting his brother, city police identified the dead man this afternoon as James King.
The 6-foot King, who has been living at the homeless shelter in Hackensack, originally is from Bogota and has family in Bergen County.
A police source with knowledge of the incident said King apparently fell asleep or passed out and ended up in the river either by accident or when the tide rose.
A man walking across the Anderson Street Bridge a little after 5 o’clock Sunday night spotted the body and dialed 911.
Hackensack police and fire personnel retrieved it.
Officers later canvassed the areas where the homeless congregate with a photo of King and identified him quickly, thanks to a series of distinctive tattoos.
