High-speed chase, crash in Closter after man assaults ex at Demarest Middle School

FIRST WITH THE DETAILS: A drunken Clifton man who “lay in wait” for his ex-girlfriend before attacking her in the parking lot of Demarest Middle School, then led police on a chase this afternoon before running a red light in Closter, where his car struck another driven by a 55-year-old Emerson woman, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Neither driver was seriously injured, although both were taken to the hospital, the prosecutor said.

Gregory Burd, 54, of Grove Street went to the school sometime this morning, Molinelli said. There, he said, Burd “lay in wait in the school parking lot, and when his ex-girlfriend arrived for her position as a secretary in the school, he began to assault her.”

The vice principal and several other teachers quickly intervened, and Burd fled, Molinelli said. The woman wasn’t seriously injured, the prosecutor said.

The police emergency call went out at 8:20 a.m. and, within minutes, a Demarest patrol officer spotted Burd’s Mercury Mountainer and went after him. But Burd took off, Molinelli said.

A second Demarest police vehicle joined in, and, less than two miles later, Burd blew the light at Schraalenberg Road and Durie Avenue, the prosecutor said.

His SUV slammed into an Infinity, and the officers quickly snatched up Burd and summoned emergency medical workers, he said.

“Officers immediately detected alcohol on the breath of Burd,” Molinelli said.

A Municipal judge set bail at $85,000 for Burd, who is under guard by Bergen County Sheriff‘s officer at Hackensack University Medical Center.

He’s due in Demarest Municipal Court Jan. 4.

Authorities charged Burd with eluding, aggravated assault, simple assault, domestic violence and several motor vehicle violations.
