Officer Manuel Tavera "was led to the bathroom [of the Catalpa Avenue home], where the woman was screaming," Police Director Michael Mordaga told Daily Voice. "He could see a partial crowning of the baby's buttocks.

"He put his hand under the baby's buttocks and had the mother continue to push."

City Firefighters Daniel Rathbun and Thomas Kavanagh of Engine 5 arrived and cut the umbilical cord at 4:14 a.m.

"The baby arrived safe and healthy," Mordaga said.

The newborn was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center by city ambulance.

"Mother and baby are doing great," city Fire Lt. Justin Derevyanik told Daily Voice Monday morning.

"It was a great team effort by the police officer and the firefighters," Mordaga said. "The result was fantastic."
