“This is evidence of the hard work and effective enforcement our officers are engaging in,” Capt. Tomas J. Padilla said of the Summer Initiative Against Crime action, the second since he became Acting Officer in Charge of the department.

“It is also evidence of the results that can and will continue to occur when we provide our officers with the tools and resources they need to complete their goals,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT early this afternoon.

Lt. Pete Busciglio of the department’s Narcotics Division headed the operation, in which detectives used street surveillance, informants and undercover buys to net the suspects, Padilla said.

“In the last 17 months, as a result of the two major narcotics-related operations, a total of  40 or so people have been charged. This doesn’t include dozens of other arrests this department has made,” Padilla told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, noting that adult arrests are up 89 percent over the same period last year.

More arrests as a result of the sweep are expected, the captain said.
