A grand jury in Bergen County returned indictments this week against both Marcel Alcala, for armed burglary and weapons possession, and Robert Leonardis – who, along with the attempted murder counts, is charged with both second- and third-degree aggravated assault (one count with a deadly weapon) and a weapons offense.

Alcala forced his way into Leonardis’s apartment, brandishing a tire iron, on April 28, 2012, as a result of unspecified bad blood between the two over Alcala’s wife, authorities said.

Investigators determined that that Leonardis’s brother disarmed Alcala, after which Robert Leonardis then “stabbed him in the abdominal area,” a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Hackensack police dispatched to the Schaefer Place building — on the fourth floor of a five-story building — said they found Alcala bleeding from at least three stab wounds. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Leonardis is being held without bail in the Bergen County Jail, having been sentenced last May for assault and weapons possession from an incident weeks before the stabbing.

Alcala, meanwhile, remains free on $50,000 bail.
