John Wolf, 24, called police last night saying that a man all dressed in black was acting suspiciously in the area of Heath Place and the Esplanade, city Police Director Michael Mordaga told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
Officer Edmund Meneses and Allen DeLeon found Wolf sitting on a curb with the knife in his hand around 5 p.m., Mordaga said.
“As they approached, he told them he’d been breaking into vehicles,” the director said. “That’s when they spotted the knife.
“They ordered him to drop it, but he refused,” Mordaga said. “Both officers then drew their weapons and continued to order him to drop the knife.
“He got up and advanced on them as they called for backup,” he said.
One of the officers then pulled his Mace and sprayed Wolf in the eyes, Mordaga said.
As he reached up with both hands, the knife in one of them, they tackled him.
Meneses wrapped his arms around Wolf while DeLeon slammed his armed down, dislodging the knife, the director said.
They then took him into custody.
“It was a crazy situation that these two officers were put into, and they did an outstanding, professional job,” Mordaga told the PILOT.
Wolf was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center, where he was being evaluated while in the custody of county sheriff’s officers.
He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest by force and a weapons possession offense.
Bail was set at $10,000.
