Police got the call just before 5:40 a.m. of someone pulling car handles on Hudson Street, Hackensack Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

After a brief chase, police grabbed 19-year-old Joseph Savarese — and found him carrying a backpack filled with proceeds of car break-ins throughout the night, Salcedo said.

These included assorted credit cards, a cameras, GPS devices, loose change and jewelry,

Savarese, of Hudson Street, was out on bail following a drug arrest in August.

He was charged by Hackensack police this morning with five counts of burglary, four counts of theft, receiving stolen property, obstruction and possession of burglary tools.

Additional charges may follow “as we identify what else was found in the backpack,” Salcedo said.

Complaints are also likely out of Little Ferry and South Hackensack once authorities there investigate.

Savarese was being held on $25,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
