Clayton L. Robinson, 27, left the beaten, cut-up and semi-conscious Paul Calli in a closet of his First Street apartment on March 6 of last year before stealing his 2007 Volvo XC90, authorities said at the time.

Family members called police after not hearing from Calli in more than a day. Let into the apartment by the building mangement company, they found him.

Hours later, they arrested Robinson at a Bronx apartment where he’d been staying.

Calli, 41, died a week later.

Robinson and his girlfriend got into an argument after she came to the apartment the night before, authorities said at the time.

Calli tried to intervene when Robinson hit the woman and was beaten himself, they said. They said he also attacked Calli with pieces of a mirror that fell off the wall and broke during the struggle.

Despite what has been a recent practice of not plea-bargaining murder cases, Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Danielle Grootenboer said during a brief arraignment in Hackensack yesterday that she’ll discuss the possibility with Robinson and defense attorney Tana McPherson.

McPherson entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf to a six-count indictment that charges Robinson with “purposely or knowingly” causing Calli’s death; leaving him “physically helpless, mentally incapacitated or otherwise unable to care for himself'; assaulting his girlfriend “under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life'; stealing Calli’s car; and hindering his arrest by disposing of the victim’s clothes and shoes.
