Jack Abramson of Hackensack, who turns 77 this Wednesday, has been in the Bergen County Jail since being ordered held on $100,000 following his arrest last week.
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said his staff began investigating Abramson “after receiving information from Nina Pineda, of Channel 7 Eyewitness News, that she had aired an investigative segment on ‘7 On Your Side’ regarding numerous consumer complaints that she had received from multiple victims regarding their business dealings with Jack Abramson and his company, JAG Equipment Sales.”
Several victims told detectives that they “had entered into purchase agreements with Jack Abramson to buy or lease commercial restaurant equipment.”
The customers said Abramson gave them invoices with prices and delivery times, then took deposts ranging from $276 to $20,400, Molinelli said.
“The victims subsequently reported that they never received the equipment,” the prosecutor said.
When they called Abramson, Molinelli said, they “were given repetitive excuses as to why the equipment had not been delivered as per the purchase agreement.”
They demanded their money back and never got it, he said.
The case was presented to a grand jury in Hackensack, which indicted Abramson on Dec. 21 on charges of theft, misconduct by a corporate official and 30 other related counts.
He had a court appearance scheduled for today.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT began making inquiries on Friday after learning of Abramson’s arrest. This comes after a Hoboken business owner complained to local police of being ripped off by Abramson’s Ridgefield-based company. The victim said he put down $12,500 for four refrigeration units that were never delivered.
Abramson’s lawyer reportedly sent a notice to the address Abramson had given, in Ridgefield. But instead of getting Jag Equipment Sales, Inc. — which has no listing anywhere — they found “Agj Equipment” listed at the 1100 River Street address, which was referred to on one online site as “Jag Equipment Dishwasher and Chemicals.”
