Under the terms of a plea deal, 52-year-old Roxanne D. Elliott of Hackensack was to repay solo practitioner John Weichsel — her employer of 26 years — and spend 364 days in the Bergen County Jail.
But Superior Court Judge Edward J. Jerejian gave her a chance to make good without incarceration.
If Elliott can’t make good, she’ll do the time after the five years is up, the judge ruled.
Elliott apologized to Weichsel during today’s sentencing, adding that she was trying to help someone in trouble.
“There are explanations, but there are no excuses, for what I did,” she said.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT broke the story last month when Elliott admitted that between Dec. 14, 2010 and June 13, 2011 she wrote five checks from Weichsel’s bank account to her own. She did so by “forging her employer’s signature on various checks, transferring funds between accounts and issuing checks made payable to herself without the consent or knowledge of her employer,” New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said.
