The call came in just after 6:30 p.m. at the three-story garden apartment complex across from the Stony Hill Inn.

Three Hackensack engines, a ladder truck and a rescue unit began attacking the second-floor blaze. A second alarm brought a Teaneck FAST team.

The fire was knocked down in under five minutes, during which city firefighters found the felines. Hackensack Volunteer EMS workers tended to the cats before they were returned to their owners (ABOVE: HFD Lt. John Taylor).

The blaze was officially declared under control at 7:06 p.m.

Hackensack police and the city building department also responded.

The South Hackensack and Bogota companies covered the city.
