Using lock and tag out, they made sure the power to the Russell Place machine was shut off and couldn't be restarted, then took it apart with small hand tools, Capt. Justin Derevyanik said.

Extraction of the man's left hand took about 15 minutes, he said.

The patient was turned over to a Hackensack University Medical Center Basic Life Suport and an Advanced Life Support team from Holy Name Medical Center.
