Hackensack Firefighters Bring Orphans, Others Early Christmas

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Dozens of children will have presents this Christmas thanks to a group of Hackensack firefighters, in what has become a growing annual tradition.

"Most if not all these kids do not have parents, or they have been taken away from their parents," Capt. Justin Derevyanik said.

"Most if not all these kids do not have parents, or they have been taken away from their parents," Capt. Justin Derevyanik said after a visit Tuesday to Youth Consultation Services (YCS) of Bergen County in Hackensack by members of IAFF Local 2081 and 3172. "Without our drive, these kids would not have received presents for Christmas."

The non-profit YCS serves children with special needs, from birth to 25. It provides educational, psycho-therapeutic and psychiatric programs, as well as crisis intervention, foster care and home placements, along with residential and in-home services.
