The victim called police while the burglar was still in his house, making it puzzling for officers who arrived moments after getting the call last week.
Detective William Inglima then developed a lead that Detectives John Mora and John Dalton traced directly across the street from the victim, Capt. Tomas J. Padilla told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
“They found everything,” said Padilla, the Hackensack department’s commander.
Robert Heyes, 29, is being held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary and theft. Meanwhile, police are looking into possible connections to other area break-ins.
Although it was solid detective work that made the difference this time, police say that residents could help make the city even safer.
It’s a help, not a hindrance, if people call us to report suspicious activity, Capt. Tomas Padilla said.
“It makes a big difference,” Padilla told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “We want people to let us know when they see something going on.”
Being aware of your surroundings also makes you less of a target, he added.
