Detectives Rocco Duardo and William Inglima and Officer Alberto Gutierrez were on Central Avenue near First Street just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when they saw two men being chased, Capt. Timothy Lloyd told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The trio chased down and grabbed two of the pursuers, one of whom was carrying a wood-handled meat cleaver in his sock, said Lloyd, the department’s commanding officer.

Tarik Jenkins and Archie Adolphus Bennett, both 19 of the Bronx, were taken into custody on weapons charges, he said.

Three and a half hours later, Detectives Ralph Cavallo and Masimo DeMartino responded to Hackensack University Medical Center on a call of a man with a stab wound in his chest.

“It was on the other side from his heart, about a centimeter in,” Lloyd said.

Cavallo and DeMartino, who recently became detectives, spoke with the victim, who told them he didn’t report the stabbing because he “didn’t think it was a big deal,” the captain said.

He also identified Jenkins and Bennett as his assailants, Lloyd said.

Also found was another man who said he was threatened by the pair.

“Here you had veteran guys on the street who see something that may be criminal, respond quickly and grab suspects, along with those who just became detectives piecing it all together,” Lloyd told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “That’s terrific work all around.”

Jenkins was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, four weapons possession counts, resisting arrest and obstruction, among other counts.

He remained held on $128,500 combined bail in the Bergen County Jail.

Bennett remained held on $3,500 bail, charged with weapons possession, obstruction and disorderly conduct.
