Detective William Inglima stopped the car for a busted taillight around 1:20 p.m. Monday, Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo said.

The driver — identified as 26-year-old Michael C. Gale — got out and asked what he was being stopped for, Salcedo said.

While ordering him back into the vehicle, Inglima noticed a plastic bag with what looked to be cocaine inside, Salcedo said.

The detective asked Gale for his consent to search the vehicle. When he agreed, Salcedo said, Inglima gave him the standard form to sign.

That’s when Gale tried to bolt, he said.

Inglima tackled and cuffed Gale after a very brief struggle, leading to additional charges, Salcedo said. Inside the car, police found heroin, as well as cocaine, the captain said.

Gale was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with distribution of heroin/cocaine, escape, assault on a police officer and hindering arrest.

He also received four motor vehicle summonses.

He had been free on bail following his May 17 arrest on another drug possession charge.
