Hackensack Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund makes a huge difference in young lives

SHOUT OUT: Hackensack High School guidance counselor Ed Acciardi had no idea when he created the Hackensack Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund 15 years ago that it would make such a difference.

In that time, the fund has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to help economically disadvantaged Hackensack students attend colleges, universities and technical schools that they otherwise couldn’t afford.

The result? Bright, driven, skilled young people who succeed — in school and in life.

Many have gone on to careers in medicine, sales, industry, media, science, technology and education. Most importantly, they have excelled as parents, as brothers and sisters, as aunts, as uncles — as people.

Not everyone becomes a Blue & Gold scholar. Recipients must have strong character and academic potential, be civic-minded and show genuine financial need. They must have an overall C average and not qualify for EOF/EOP.

Applicants must also submit an essay describing their reasons for wanting and needing the scholarship, along with an official transcript and two letters of recommendation — one from the school and another from a non-relative.

The tax exempt 501(c)(3) Hackensack Blue & Gold is nearly a third of the way toward its goal of distributing $1 million in scholarships.

That’s where YOU come in.

“Alumni and friends often ask how much is appropriate to give,” organizers say. “This is, of course, a personal decision. Every gift is greatly valued and worthwhile.”

The Hackensack Blue & Gold Scholarship donations are a powerful way to memorialize a loved one, a friend or family member.

Place a donation in someone’s name for a birthday, wedding or other special event in lieu of a gift, thank you, or condolences card.

There are also a variety of estate, will, and legacy giving options available. You can be part of the solution.

“I get very excited to see so many graduates, young adults, become pillars of society,” said Acciardi, who served the school district for 35 years. “Having met many for lunch and dinner since my retirement knowing that their own successes are beyond any expectation is rewarding.

“To see the members of the Hackensack Blue and Gold Scholarship Fund bond and be concerned to see that those still at Hackensack High School SUCCEED is so wonderful,” he said. “They care and they are involved.”

The driving forces behind the fund, in addition to Acciardi, include Mike Fratello, the TV basketball analyst, former NBA coach and HHS alumnus.
