When they arrived at the Grand Avenue home in the city’s 2nd Ward on Saturday, three uniformed officers found several family members in separate dust-ups — and immediately called for reinforcements.
The officers “tried not only to break up the fights going on among family members but to also shield two babies from being hurt,” Detective Capt. Tim Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The infants are 3 months and 11 months old, he said.
“These are absolutely nightmare calls for police,” Torell added. “Often in these situations the violence ends up directed at us.”
Eight more officers soon joined the trio.
By the time it was over, the matriarch of the family, Geraldine Moore (above), was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
In addition, four teenagers were taken into custody.
Juvenile complaints were filed against a 14-year-old girl for aggravated assault on a police officer, and against a 16-year-old and 17-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy for disorderly conduct, Torell said.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency also was summoned, he said.
Moore sustained a leg injury during the melee and was treated at Englewood Medical Center, the captain said. She was released pending a Municipal Court appearance and had the charges against her forwarded to the Bergen County Procecutor’s Office for grand jury action.
The complaints against the four juveniles will be heard in the Family Part of Superior Court in Hackensack.
