Gang Busters: Bergen Drug Sellers, Buyers Nabbed, Prosecutor Says

BEHIND THE STORY: A series of quick and decisive sweeps netted 20 arrests — several of alleged gang members, including a few ex-cons — following a series of undercover drug buys throughout Bergen County, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

One thing many of those arrested have in common: This wasn’t their first time.

For instance, records show:

Jose Delorbe, 24, of Passaic, served more than 14 months of what originally was a four-year prison sentence for theft and is awaiting disposition of an assault case. This came after he was put on probation for aggravated assault and criminal mischief.

Brian Guzman, 23, of Clifton was released in April 2010 after serving 22 months for making and selling hash. This came he got probation for a drug possession conviction.

Fredrick C. Tyson, 29, Jersey City, served 2 1/2 years for selling drugs near a school. He’s now charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

It wasn’t only young adults caught: A Fairview man charged with drug dealing is 56.

And it wasn’t only men: Yvonne N. Patino, 24, and Kimberly L. Dewitt, 29, both of Garfield were caught buying drugs, authorities said.

According to an abridged version of a news release:

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced the arrests of twenty (20) members of various Bergen County street gang members, as part of a county Gang Initiative.

The arrests came about as a result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Gang Unit, under the direction of Chief Steven Cucciniello, the Bergen County Sherriff’s Department, under the direction of Sheriff Michael Saudino, the Hackensack Police Department, under the direction of Acting Officer-in-Charge Thomas Padilla, the Ridgefield Park Police Department, under the direction of Chief Edward Rose, the Garfield Police Department, under the direction of Chief Kevin Amos, the Tenafly Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael P. Bruno, the Englewood Police Department, under the direction of Chief Arthur O’Keefe and the Teaneck Police Department, under the direction of Chief Robert A. Wilson.

The arrests are a result of a four (4) month long undercover operation, which was conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Gang Unit.

In May, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Gang Unit began gathering intelligence on various criminal street gangs in the Bergen County area.

The intelligence revealed that street gangs were engaged in the illegal sale of drugs. As a result of this information, undercover detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Gang Unit targeted and purchased various illegal drugs.

In addition to arresting the street gang members, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Gang Unit also arrested the customers of these gang members.

Molinelli thanked: the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, the Hackensack Police Department, the Ridgefield Park Police Department, the Garfield Police Department, the Tenafly Police Department, the Englewood Police Department, and the Teaneck Police Department for their assistance and cooperation with this investigation.
