Federal marshal chased fugitive through Route 3 traffic in East Rutherford, indictment says

ONLY ON CVP: A fugitive ex-con who authorities said was carrying two handguns and more than a quarter-pound of cocaine when he was tracked down at an East Rutherford motel led a U.S. marshal on a chase through Route 3 traffic before being caught, an indictment returned in Hackensack alleges.

Marcus Carter, 35, of Staten Island had taken a room at the Homestead Village/Extended Stay when he was found last Aug. 13.

With help from East Rutherford police, members of the New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force closed in, then chased the fleeing fugitive before a dash through traffic ended in his arrest.

According to the indictment returned by a grand jury in Hackensack last week, Carter was carrying two Raven Arms .25 caliber handguns, hollow-nose bullets and the cocaine.

The charges against him include being a felon in possession of a handgun, having been convicted of drug-related felonies on Staten Island.

Local police said the 123 bags of cocaine would have sold for roughly $7,500 on the street.

Carter remained held on $42,500 bail today in the Bergen County Jail.

The total charges: two counts of handgun possession and single counts each of having illegal ammunition, possessing a weapon while committing a drug crime, drug possession, distributing cocaine, resisting arrest and being a fugitive from justice.
