Andre Powell, 27, is being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and threatening to kill.

Powell, who lives with the woman and their three children in East Orange, apparently followed her to the Route 46 motel, where he rammed the back of her car, shattering the back window, just after 6:30 last night.

He then chased her along the highway as she tried to get away, Patrolman John Andronaco told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Powell’s car again rammed hers as she stopped at a red light at Liberty Street, pushing the vehicle into the intersection, Andronaco said.

“Good thing there wasn’t anyone coming,” he said.

The pursuit continued through the streets of Little Ferry before the terrified woman blew a stop sign heading south on Pickens Street and her car rammed another going west on Washington Avenue. The 19-year-old driver sustained undetermined injuries.

While diverting traffic from the area, Andronaco, Lt. Scott Kral, Detective Ron Callahan and Officer Demetrius Dacres began interviewing people.

Parked in his car, watching the scene, was Powell, Andronaco said.

After speaking with the girlfriend, the officers took him into custody.

NOTE: CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM ordinarily doesn’t report domestic violence incidents. This, however, included public violence, a high degree of danger to others and a motor-vehicle accident that resulted in an injury.
