Epileptic driver rescue by Wood-Ridge, Carlstadt police after Route 17 van crash

CVP EXCLUSIVE: An epileptic Rutherford man who suffered a seizure behind the wheel was freed by after he crashed his van into the divider on Route 17 in Wood-Ridge just after noon today.

Wood-Ridge and Carlstadt officers found the disabled van against the divider and the unconscious driver curled up in a fetal position on the floor between his and the passenger’s seat, Wood-Ridge Detective Joseph Rutligliano Jr. told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“The vehicle was still running and still in drive,” Rutigliano said. “All of the doors were locked.”

So the officers smashed a window, opened a door and got the middle-aged driver out.

As he began to come to, they found and called a family contact, Rutligliano said.

The Wood-Ridge Emergency Squad and paramedics arrived and took the man to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Traffic was briefly delayed while he was tended to, the van was moved and the broken glass was cleaned up.
