Police units flooded the area of Chestnut and North Dean streets Saturday night after several 911 callers said the truck hit a street sign, a utility pole and the two vehicles just after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Officer Adolfo Gutierrez spotted the truck, with heavy front end damage, on South Dean Street about a half-mile from the crashes, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Officers Jerel Hammond and Reynaldo Rose joind Gutierrez in stopping the vehicle at Van Nostrand Avenue, he said.

They smelled “a strong odor of alcohol” coming from city resident Fernando Mesa-Vera, who was taken into custody, the captain said.

They later charged him with three counts of assault by auto and DWI and issued him several traffic summonses.

Mesa-Vera, who has a criminal history stretching back several years, was arrested on  by South Hackensack police on a $500 warrant out of Newark on March 30 and was released eight days later, records show. He remained held in the jail tonight on $6,000 bail.
