Sule Ouhuru took his ex-girlfriend’s legally registered carbine rifle after holding her against her will in her Englewood home and firing the .45-caliber shot that nearly hit their daughter on Jan. 9, 2013, an indictment returned in Hackensack says.
He then took off in her 2004 Honda Accord, it says.
Ouhuru — who spent nearly five years in prison for a 1997 drug conviction — is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and trying to get the woman not to cooperate with investigators.
The woman, who has two children with Ouhuru, lived in the Rock Creek complex in the city’s 2nd Ward.
A manhunt ended nearly three months later when he turned himself in to police.
Ouhuru, 37, was free on bail when he stopped at the Jade Lee Kitchen takeout restaurant in early June 2013.
Spotting his car out front, Marque Edwards forced his way in, thinking his target was inside, police said.
When he realized it wasn’t him, Edwards ran into the restaurant.
As the horrified staff looked on, he “began viciously stabbing Ouhuru,” Englewood Detective Capt. Timothy Torell said at the time.
“Edwards then ran out of the store and into a waiting vehicle with several other occupants in it,” Torell said.
Several area surveillance cameras captured the getaway, the captain said.
City police found Ouhuru on the floor of the other side of the takeout counter, bleeding heavily from several stab wounds. They notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office that they could have a possible homicide on their hands.
“It was one of the worst stabbings I’ve ever seen where the person survived,” Torell said.
Two weeks later, detectives and U.S. marshals caught up with Edwards in an apartment in the Bronx, authorities said. He was charged with first-degree attempted murder.
