End DWI Vigil In Hackensack Draws Loved Ones, Law Enforcement

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A procession of police cars, their path illuminated by candles, followed the reading of names of more than 350 victims of drunk drivers during a solemn END DWI Sabers & Roses event Monday night in Hackensack.

END DWI President Lynn Sucorowski addressed the gathering of law enforcement officers and loved ones of victims.

So did Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal and Sheriff Michael Saudino, pledging to continue their mission to end such tragedies.

Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino, the president of the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association, did the same during the ceremony at the county administration building.

The purpose, Sucorowski told Daily Voice, is to "remember those who were killed by drunk drivers and bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving."

Particularly poignant during the reading were the groupings of victims with the same surnames, indicating multiple deaths.

Candles were then given to families and friends of the victims before everyone went outside.

There the loved ones lined up on one side and a police honor guard on the other, as a procession of police vehicles passed.
