“It looks like a tragic accident,” said Capt. Tomas Padilla, the department commander.
Charges are unlikely, he said, adding that the shaken driver was fully cooperative.
Robert Carroll, who turned 70 two weeks ago, was crossing at the intersection of Lehigh Street near a Rite-Aid pharmacy, a block down from the Arena Diner, when he was struck by the eastbound vehicle.
He was taken to nearby Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the captain said.
An investigation is continuing, he said.
