Authorities ordinarily hold a convicted defendant at the Bergen County Jail until sentencing.
Quaran S. Chance, however, told Superior Court Judge James J. Guida that he’d rather be immediately sent back to prison out of state — where he’s serving a six-year term for another conviction — and not attend a scheduled Aug. 14 sentencing.
The judge said he didn’t have the authority to direct jail officials when to transport him, but he agreed to sentence Chance in absentia to a year behind bars.
Authorities originally charged Chance in October 2011 with four counts of defrauding the TD Bank branch in East Rutherford branch while using debit and gift cards belonging to other people in six other instances.
Charges were reduced in exchange for his guilty plea to a single count of presenting a phton driver’s license.
