The car’s tires squealed as the driver turned onto Linden Street from Passaic Street around 5:30 a.m. yesterday, Sheriff Michael Saudino said this morning.
Activating his lights and siren, Officer Matthew DeBonis began chasing the red Toyota, which continued north on Linden Street, Saudino said.
The driver — identified as Devin Hobson — “then made an abrupt right turn onto Clinton Place, failing to stop and without signaling,” the sheriff said.
He then pulled into a parking spot in the parking garage of the Linden House Apartments, Saudino said.
DeBonis ordered Hobson out of the car, but he refused to comply, he said.
The officer then saw Hobson “bending over towards the floor of the vehicle,” the sheriff said. “[He] appeared to be reaching under the front seat.”
Officers from Saudino’s K-9 Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrived, along with Hackensack police.
After several attempts to talk Hobson out, they grabbed him, Saudino said. He smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot and glassy eyes, the sheriff said.
Hobson refused both a field sobriety and breath test and was arrested on DWI charges, along with eluding and obstruction.
Officers also issued 13 summonses, Saudino said.
Hobson, who turned 30 last week, posted $7,500 bail and was released pending an Aug. 14 hearing in Central Municipal Court in Hackensack.
The car was impounded for evidence.
“These incidents highlight the dangers that officers encounter every day,” Saudino said.
He thanked Hackensack police “for their assistance in securing the arrest.”
