DWI charge against son of former Hackensack police chief’s ex-girlfriend

ANOTHER CVP SCOOP: The son of former Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa’s ex-girlfriend was arrested by city police for drunk driving after he was found sleeping behind the wheel of his car before dawn — in the oncoming lane, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

A patrol officer found 25-year-old Ryan Tiernan on South Summit Avenue just before 3 a.m., according to a police report.

Tiernan, who doesn’t currently have a driver’s license, was charged with DWI and driving while on the suspended list, the report says. He was processed and released pending a Municipal Court hearing.

Tiernan’s mother, Kathleen, was involved in a drunk-driving incident in 2008 that a jury in Hackensack last spring convicted Zisa of covering up.

A judge has stayed Zisa’s five-year sentence pending an appeal of the official misconduct and insurance fraud convictions. He remains under house arrest with a monitoring bracelet.

Zisa also was convicted of official misconduct in connection with Ryan Tiernan’s involvement in the 2004 robbery and assault case of a 15-year-old boy outside of a convenience store and another case involving Tiernan’s brother.

A judge in Hackensack overturned that conviction, however.

Zisa was originally accused of ordering two Hackensack officers to leave Ryan Tiernan’s name out of the incident report in connection with the 2004 mugging.

Charges weren’t filed against any of the suspects, although prosecutors said probable cause existed to do so.

Although convictions on three of the four most serious counts were overturned, Zisa still faces five or more years in prison without parole.
