Dumont 5th-grader succumbs to critical injuries after jumping from second-floor school window

UPDATE: A fifth-grade boy succumbed to his injuries late this afternoon after deliberately jumping from a second-story window at the Grant School in Dumont around noon.

The 10-year-old youngster apparently had a dispute with another boy over a chess game, then wrote a note that was given to a school lunch aide before he jumped nearly 25 feet from a window on the east side of the building, landing on the sidewalk below, sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The boy was on a ventilator after being brought to the trauma unit at Hackensack University Medical Center with head injuries that included multiple facial fractures.

A distraught teacher also had to be hospitalized.

Dumont BLS and Englewood ALS responded, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and state investigators.

Area streets were closed down while authorities investigated so that some parents could pick up their children. Other classes and activities continued into the afternoon.

Dumont Police Chief Joseph L. Faulborne Jr. tonight confirmed the boy’s death, the pronouncement of which sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT was around 4:30 p.m.
