As his mother watched from a window above, Raymond Peralta-lantigua “launched himself off the porch” at officers who responded to her 911 call that her son had severely beaten her, ripped a TV from the wall and was “going crazy” at their Johnson Avenue home, sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
He had a knife and had gone downstairs after she threatened to call 911, said the woman, who retreated to another room to call police.
Then she went to the window.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT reported last night that a witness told a law enforcement officer from another agency that Peralta-Lantigua “went after the cop with a knife” and “was trying to hurt him [when] the cop shot him.”
Peralta-Lantigua threw a large rock at the first officer on scene, who put his cruiser into reverse, witnesses said.
The second officer pulled up, got out and was backing up, repeatedly ordering the knife-wielding Dominican national “aggressively advancing” on him to relent, they said.
Then he fired twice.
Peralta-Lantigua, struck once in the chest, fell where he was standing, witnesses said.
The officer immediately began CPR, they said.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Peralta-Lantigua — who acquired a criminal record in the two years since his brother brought him into the country — was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center and was pronounced dead there a short time later, city Police Director Michael Mordaga told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The knife was recovered, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.
Among his priors, Peralta-Lantigua was arrested by Hackensack police in May on criminal trespassing charges from the month before. He spent three days in the Bergen County Jail before posting $2,500 bail, records show.
He also had a history of arrests for drug possession and skipping court.
Police had been called to the house to deal with him before, Mordaga told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
