A Ford Escape and Dodge Charger had collided in front of him when the Toyota Matrix driver apparently swerved to the right and caught the Charger’s rear passenger-side bumper in the southbound lane near Etna Avenue.

His car then partially rolled up the side of the Charger and overturned.

Emerson Engine 26 and Rescue 28 stabilized the car on its side with wooden blocks and step chocks while Emerson police tended the driver while awaiting EMS units from Westwood and Hackensack University Medical Center.

Firefighters then cut out the Toyota’s windshield and removed him through the rear hatch after cutting out the Toyota’s windshield. He was taken to HUMC.

“The majority of his injuries appeared to be bleeding from his face due to cuts from broken glass,” one witness told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Police had both drivers of the other vehicles respond to headquarters to provide statements.

Southbound Kinderkamack Road traffic was diverted across Ackerman Avenue. Oradell police shut down the intersection of Soldier Hill and Kinderkamack, diverting northbound traffic.

The extrication, cleanup and investigation lasted about an hour.
