Driver, 90, plows brand-new car into PIP convenience store

Neither occupant was injured seriously, said PIP Lt. Michael J. Coppola, the department commander.

The Queens couple was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, both with head injuries, by EMS. Neither injury appeared serious.

Martin Mermelstein had just bought the Civic and stopped at the gas pump for fuel — with his wife, Lorraine — at the southbound Sunoco station just after 11 a.m.

Realizing the vehicle was still in drive, he “accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the break, causing the vehicle to jump the curb” and hit the building, Coppola said.

“Damage caused the front wall to shift, as well as the checkout counter to move out of place,” he said. “No other injuries were sustained and Sunoco employees are working on repairs.”
