Carmine DeSomma, 28, of Lodi was undergoing a brain scan at Hackensack University Medical Center following the 10:35 a.m. crash, a family member told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“We’re all praying,” she said.

The driver also was hospitalized after the eastbound Chevy Malibu hit and pinned DeSomma on a bridge spanning railroad lines and Midland Avenue just before Exit 62.

DeSomma, a former borough Housing Authority employee and the nephew of former Lodi Mayor Thomas DeSomma, was freed by responders and taken by Saddle Brook ambulance to HUMC.

New Jersey State Police were handling the investigation.
