Gov. Christie signed the measure approved by state legislators into law on Tuesday extending protections in the New Jersey Crime Victim's Bill of Rights.
“A person who has lost their beloved partner to homicide should have access to the same benefits and protections afforded to spouses and relatives,” said state Sen. Kip Bateman, a major proponent of the bill. “A victim’s domestic or civil union partner is no less deserving than any other loved one coping with such an unthinkable loss."
The legislation championed by Bateman expands the definition to include a domestic or civil union partner along with a spouse, parent, legal guardian, grandparent, child or sibling of someone who is killed by another person.
