The robbers knocked first, then smashed in the back door when the homeowner didn’t immediately answer, the 67-year-old Mill Run homeowner told police.
They tied him up up with a telephone cord, ransacked the house and fled, Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said. But he quickly free himself and called police, the chief said.

Hackensack Detectives Rocco Duardo and Sgt. Scott Sybel and Detective Elliot Cookson of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office were working an unrelated case off Route 4 and Hackensack Avenue when they heard the bulletin from their Paramus colleagues just after 1 p.m.
The detectives chased the red Dodge van with Virginia license plates to the Belle Avenue exit near Woods Road in Teaneck, where two occupants bailed out.
One ran through backyards and another hopped the divider running across Route 4, Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
A man and a woman remained in the vehicle and were immediately taken into custody, he said.
City narcotics Detectives William Inglima and Mark Gutierrez pulled up and chased one suspect through backyards before catching him, Mordaga said.
Officer Nicholas Ortiz spotted the other soon after on the other side of Route 4.
He resisted, but Ortiz got help subduing him from a moving company employee, Mordaga said.
“It was excellent job all the way around, from the detectives to the civilian,” he said. “Paramus gave out perfect details.”
Police found burglary tools and robbery proceeds in the van.
They were working to identify and process the suspects.
Area schools were briefly on lockdown.
Bergen County Police and a county sheriff’s K-9 team assisted.
