Willie Banks was taken into custody after the woman saw him at the Main Street convenience store and contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Capt. Timothy Lloyd told Daily Voice Thursday night.
Detectives responded and identified Banks from video surveillance, said Lloyd, the department's commanding officer in charge.
They found him soon after at his Poplar Avenue residence, near the scene of the Nov. 27 assault, he said.
Banks was taken to headquarters, where he "confessed while being interviewed by detectives," the captain said.
The assailant forced the woman to pull down her pants, digitally penetrated her and made her use her cellphone to illuminate the contents of her purse, law enforcement sources said following the assault. He fled after spotting a feminine hygiene protect inside the bag, they said.
