The 5th Street resident told police she went to her second-floor window after hearing the doorbell ring just before 7:20 a.m., Police Chief Thomas Nielsen said this afternoon. Her doors were locked, she said.

Hearing a noise downstairs, the woman went to her bedroom and found the burglar, who then bolted, Nielsen said.

Based on the description she provided, Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer James Shielzo found 56-year-old Michael Grover of Garfield at the Daily Deli on Hackensack Street moments later, the chief said.

Besides the woman’s ring, Grover “also had keys to the victim’s apartment,” he said.

Carlstadt Officers Felix D’Amico, Scott Jordan and John Rood placed Grover under arrest and took him to headquarters. Detective Sgt. David Smith was the lead investigator.

Grover was being held on $26,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary, illegal weapon and burglar tools possession and theft.

A Municipal Court date was set for this Thursday.
