Officer Jared Shatkin was monitoring Route 17 traffic when he stopped a red Chevy with Pennsylvania license plates for tailgating Monday afternoon.
Both the driver and passenger said they didn’t have kids or jobs, Detective James DePreta told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
“They said they were going to a bunch of baby showers,” he said.
Several diaper bags in the bag seat each had cards in them, the detective added.
Also in the car was a bag with three new iPhones bought at Apple store in Paramus, he said.
Both men were brought in for questioning, after which DePreta said officers discovered the driver carrying 14 fraudulent credit cards inside the groin area of his pants.
The pair bought gift cards with stolen credit card numbers and then used them for $2,000 worth of iPhones on Monday, as well as two others worth a combined $1,600 in a previous purchase, the detective said.
There were no receipts for the nearly three dozen bags and large boxes of diapers, he said.
The car was rented last week, when the spree apparently began, DePreta said.
“It’s easy to buy up all those diapers and then sell them,” he said.
The driver, Tyquan Catala, 24 (above, left), and his 21-year-old passenger Kevin McKinnon (right), were released pending court hearings.
