Andre Hinds, 31, Trenton was involved in a domestic dispute with a woman when he took off in her 2015 BMW X6 just after 1 a.m., Capt. James Prise told Daily Voice.
Officers responding to her call spotted the car at the corner of Passaic Street and Prospect Avenue, Prise said.
They tried to pull it over, but Hinds hit and gas and sped off, he said.
He pulled onto Franklin Place and then through several side streets at a high rate of speed before the Beamer hit the railroad tracks at Terrace Place and popped three feet off the ground, the captain said.
It struck a parked vehicle as it landed, then swerved into a tree on Euclid Avenue before Hinds exited through the passenger side and took off, he said.
Hinds ran south toward Clinton Place and east on Pangborn Place near Holy Trinity Church before he was tackled by city Officer Christopher Gatti -- who once played football for Montclair State University.
Hinds, who records show has previous arrests for fraud, was wanted on a parole violation, Prise noted.
He remained at city police headquarters late Thursday afternoon -- charged with eluding and hindering and issued various summonses -- while detectives investigated the source of the contraband found in the car.
