The victim suffered cuts and needed several stitches to close a gash inside his mouth after getting punched several times in the face and kicked in the head and side after he fell, Englewood Police Chief Arthur O’Keefe said.
Ramarr Obrynt Pannell-Bishop “gave the driver less than the required fare” when he boarded the NJ Transit bus just before noon Monday on Lafayette Place, the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
When the driver told him he was short 85 cents, the 6-foot-7-inch Pannell-Bishop “said that was all the driver was going to get,” O’Keefe said.
The driver told police he asked again, then offered to give an agitated Pannell-Bishop back his money when he refused.
In front of several witnesses, the driver was pulled from the bus and beaten, and his assailant ran off, O’Keefe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. The driver was taken to Englewood Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
It didn’t take Englewood police long to track down their suspect.
Pannell-Bishop, who has drug arrests in Hackensack and Englewood on his rap sheet, was picked up by city police a day after the attack, O’Keefe said.
He is being held on $135,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a bus operator and interference with public transportation.
