“Everyone was medically cleared last night and taken to the jail for courtesy holds until transportation could be arranged,” a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
All five were kept in a secure area of the jail, not in cells, he said.
The private Chevy van left Florida with two drivers and the inmates on Tuesday for a straight run up the East Coast to correctional facilities in Brooklyn, Philadelphia and elsewhere.
The drivers said they each took turns behind the wheel while the other slept, with stops at fast-food restaurants and correctional facilities so everyone aboard could use the bathrooms.
Just after 3 p.m., the van rear-ended a Honda at milepost 114.6 on the northbound western spur of the Turnpike, State Police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Ambulances from Carlstadt and Moonachie responded.
No serious injuries were reported, but the inmates and drivers were checked out for bumps and bruises at Bergen Regional Medical Center.
Saudino’s officers accompanied everyone to the hospital and kept watch before bringing the inmates to the River Street jail in Hackensack for their brief stay.
Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino confirmed that all five are federal inmates who weren’t originally headed to the county lockup. They weren’t expected to stay long.
