Brazen bank robbers on the loose, FBI seeks public’s help

The FBI released a series of photos that agents hope will help catch two men responsible for a “takeover-style” holdup of a Wachovia Bank branch in Hackensack.

Both burst into the Johnson Avenue bank waving handguns and clothed in hoodies, black gloves and black pants. One jumped over the counter and threatened t kill a ataller while the second remained on the customer side, the FBI in Newark said today.

“After emptying more than one teller drawer, the robber who vaulted the counter jumped back to the other side and both robbers fled the scene,” said FBI Special Agent Bryan Travers. No injuries were reported.

Although the FBI has a strict policy of not revealing how much was taken, experience in “takeover” heists shows a likelihood of up to $6,000, if the robbers knew where to look.

Both were both described as thin and black, one in his late 20s and the other about 45 years old. One was just under six feet tall and the other closer to 5 1/2 feet tall.

Hackensack police confirmed that the getaway vehicle was a stolen blue 2003 Dodge Caravan owned by a private school, with New Jersey license plates S2H135. It likely was dumped somewhere fairly quickly.

That same day, Mahwah police caught a separate robber who they said held up a Bank of America branch on Route 17.

Anyone with information on the Hackensack holdup is asked to contact the FBI at 973-792-3000.

And remember: The FBI offers rewards for information leading to convictions of bank robbers and other fugitives — but the bureau emphasizes that citizens should simply call local police and not try to approach a dangerous individual themselves. Too much could go wrong, not just for you, but for others.
