City police officially said this morning that they’re awaiting confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office in order to contact next of kin before releasing his name.
However, a police source with knowledge of the incident said the man apparently fell asleep or passed out and ended up in the river either by accident or when the tide rose.
“At this point, there is nothing suspicious about it,” the source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
A man walking across the Anderson Street Bridge a little after 5 o’clock last night spotted the body and dialed 911. Hackensack police and fire personnel retrieved it.
Officers later canvassed the areas where the homeless congregate with a photo of the man.
Photos were also forwarded to the Medical Examiner’s Office, which was expected to confirm an identification this morning.
