“There seems to be more to the story,” Foligno said after the 19-year-old man was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center yesterday afternoon with what he described as moderate injuries.
The victim, who wasn’t charged, had blood flowing down his face from several cuts when officers responding to a large fight at the Elmwood Village Garden Apartments found 15 or so combatants “engaged in a full-scale brawl” around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, the chief said.
The rest of those involved scattered into the complex courtyard, he said.
The injured man told police he’d gone to meet acquaintances who ived there to get a tattoo in one of the apartments, Foligno said.
When he got out of his car, he told police, “a large group of individuals came running out of one of the apartments armed with baseball bats and tire irons and began attacking him,” the chief said.
A tire iron with blood on it was located next to a parked car that had fresh blood splattered on the sides and rear, he added.
Officers were interviewing the teen while EMTs tended to him when he “suddenly became uncooperative and began running from the area,” Foligno said.
He was “brought under control after a brief foot chase by officers” and “could not give a valid reason for running away,” the chief said.
Officers searched the area but couldn’t find any suspects, he said, adding that an investigation was continuing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Elmwood Park police: (201) 796-0700.
