Bizarre courtroom response ends bail hearing for Lodi man charged with killing grandmother, 85

EXCLUSIVE: A bail reduction request for a Lodi man charged with shooting and killing his grandmother collapsed before it began today when he questioned his public defender’s credentials — and a judge, in turn, saying she intends to order a psychiatrist evaluation to determine whether he’s competent to stand trial.

Bergen County Sheriff’s officers returned 28-year-old Joseph Bariso to the county jail on $2.1 million bail after the bizarre development.

Given the opportunity to request a reduction in his bail, Bariso (above, in court today) said he wasn’t comfortable with defense attorney Aaron Miller because he had “no proof” that Miller actually is a lawyer.

Miller — who was filling in for Senior Public Defender Jacklyn Medina — indulgently requested time to huddle with the defendant and produce his credentials.

Even Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi told Bariso: “I can assure you Mr. Miller is a public defender.”

Bariso replied: ““I see no evidence of that.”

DeAvila-Silebi was having none of it.  She allowed time for Bariso to talk with Miller outside the courtroom.

But Bariso wasn’t satisfied and opted for a return to the jail.

Miller said that he could sympathize with Bariso.

“He is facing some very serious charges,” the lawyer told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Authorities said he shot Olga Bariso several times as she lay sleeping on her living-room couch on Dec. 29.

Authorities issued an all-points bulletin for the younger Bariso after police were called to the house. Rutherford police found him walking along Rutherford Avenue several hours later.

Charges were upgraded to murder after his grandmother died on Jan. 11.
